Assistive Technology Training
Technology is everywhere! And for people who are blind or visually impaired, knowing how to use assistive technology can make a world of difference. At VISIONS, we believe access to the right tools, and the knowledge to use them, is essential for independence, confidence, and connection.
Introduction
VISIONS offers hands-on training in assistive technology to help participants use computers, smartphones, tablets, and other devices with confidence. This training is tightly integrated across many of our programs, from our Youth Services, to Workforce, to our Older Adult Center, because we understand how vital technology skills are for everyday life, learning, and employment.
Participants receive instruction in both hardware and software, with a focus on how they work together. Training includes tools like screen readers (JAWS, VoiceOver), screen magnification software (ZoomText Fusion), refreshable Braille displays, digital video magnifiers, large print keyboards, and more. We also cover essential skills, including using web browsers, Windows and Mac operating systems, using Microsoft Office, managing files, and typing.
All instruction is provided by Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialists (CATIS), either one-on-one or in small groups. Sessions are held at our Assistive Technology Centers, our 500 Greenwich Street office in Manhattan, or, when needed, at a participant’s home or workplace. While VISIONS does not provide devices, our staff can help participants learn to use the technology they already have or receive from the NYSCB.

VISIONS at Selis Manor
Opened in 2001, this center features accessible computers with JAWS and ZoomText, large print keyboards, and desktop magnifiers. It also offers computer literacy and basic tech classes for older adults who are members of VISIONS Center on Aging.

Vocational Rehabilitation Center
Opened in 2018, this center supports participants in VISIONS Workforce and Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) programs. The center includes accessible technology and provides tech training to help participants build skills for future employment.

We're Proud to Serve Participants in the Hudson Valley
Through an agreement with the New York State Commission for the Blind (NYSCB), VISIONS is able to offer Assistive Technology services to individuals in the following counties: Rockland, Westchester, Orange, Putnam, Sullivan, Ulster, and Dutchess.
The agreement helps make sure that those living in these counties have access to important technology services. Referrals from each participant’s NYSCB counselor are required for each of these services.
Assistive Technology Training is carried out at VISIONS Center on Blindness and the Nancy D. Miller Vocational Rehabilitation Center.
